The Cross

Surprisingly we haven't had a thread about this yet... or at least, I haven't seen one here.

Anyway.

Fresh from OLove, originally posted by shenanyginz, here are NEWS about Orlando's current project - as it seems - which he will start shooting allegedly this month or the next.

Concept art for Gattaca director Andrew Niccol's next dystopian project THE CROSS

Since bringing us the trend setting GATTACA back in 1997, writer/director Andrew Niccol has shied away from hermetic science fiction, deciding instead to keep it light with films like S1m0ne or The Truman Show. Now however, all that's about to change as Niccol heads back to dark, symbolic scifi with The Cross - a film that pits larger than life characters (with names like "Castro" and "Guideon") in almost mythological scale conflict.

When we reported on the project almost a year ago, there wasn't much to go on but the thought of a new scifi project from Niccol was almost enough. Almost. Now we're excited to be able to share some early concept art from designer Jean-Vincent Puzos (Tykho Moon, 10,000 BC). It shows the "small" film to have great scope and we can't help but wonder if Niccol will finally take his place rightful place alongside genre heavyweights like Danhy Boyle, and Chris Nolan.

Synopsis:
Mylar (Bloom) and his younger brother Castro come to a town to cross the border in search of a better life. The two travelers, full of hope, all too quickly realize that their journey leads them to an inescapable world full of doom. The enigmatic border is strictly enforced under the command of a guard, Guideon, who prohibits anyone from ever leaving. Castro doesn’t make it alive past two weeks, but Mylar defies all odds and becomes the first to successfully cross the border. And he also becomes the first to come back… all for the love of a woman, Vera. Mylar must now devise a plan not only to set himself free, but all of his fellow citizens as well. But perhaps crossing the border is not the answer. Perhaps the key lies in altering the border and whatever it may represent…

The Cross already stars a stellar cast of Orlando Bloom, Vincent Cassel, John Goodman and Olga Kurylenko. It's currently in-production in Australia with a 2010 release date attached. After you see the artwork after the break, I think you'll see why we here at QE are excited about this one

If you ask me - from ancient-times movies to science-fiction? A HUUUUGE step. But surely a great one! I'm already thrilled to see the result!

I loved Gattaca already. And the plotline sounds intriguing.

I don't want to get into it too much before having seen any set-pics or of Orlando in character, but it sounds like I'm going to have a new Orlando favourite...

*crosses fingers*

Re: The Cross

That artwork's creepy, I really hope our future world doesn't really look like how it's always portrayed! Thanks for that, the synopsis sounds really interesting. At least it's not just fading away and being forgotten like the Red Circle. bah!

Re: The Cross

Actually, that city there reminds me of so many cities here where brown coal mining used to be... You know, we have a specific area in Germany, called the Ruhr Valley... The scenery is pretty dominated by smoking factory chimneys, dark and dismal buildings...

AHM... didn't I read they had film-location issues?

I think... HEY, Orlando!!!!! ** I've got the perfect location then for the film!!!!!

Re: The Cross

Thanks for the Info Alex!

hmmm, alot of it reminds me of star wars, but I guess thats the whole Sci-Fi part of it...

I'm feeling that this movie is going to be alot different from his recent ones and will probably attract the crowd that Lord of The Rings was targetted at. (perhaps on the more nerdy side?) My brother in law is super excited for this one actually, since I sent him information about it. So I have a feeling it's less of a target for Girls and more for the closet Nerds in all of us.

Nevertheless, I am a closet Nerd so I'm excited for this one. And the concept Art with Orlando in it looks aweeesssommeee!!!

Re: The Cross

^ There's a thing that irks me though... This film is going to be aimed more at the male movie-goers, I assume. It's definitely no candy-movie - hence, I think not something for the young Orlando-fangirls. This might cause a few more members here to drift away from the board... But that aside, there's a bigger problem.

With Orlando in the lead - opposite Vincent Cassel... I think I hear the wolfpack howl again... and not in a good way referring to Orlando. Like everyone will praise Vincent to the skies wheras they're going to bash Orlando again... like they've always done in the past.

Just read a few comments on IMDB... yeah, I know... "special" candidates over there as well as on rottentomatoes.com... (they bug me like hell!) But they don't believe in Orlando's skills at all. They already diss him before they have seen the new movies. How the heck can he ever do it right when such a lot of people are biased like this? I just feel frustrated for him.

I seriously hope for Orlando that during the time-off he took the past year and the (smaller) roles he played in the other movies he has gained some skills. And that he will BLOW THEM ALL OFF THEIR SEATS!

Re: The Cross

Alex,
I hear what your saying! I think Orlando needs to pull out all stops in his performance in this role. He needs to have a departure from LOTR, Pirates and then stop the criticism that he received from KOH, Elizabethtown and Haven.

I saw the clip of him in NYILY and to me, it wasn't acting. It was simply him. To be fair the segment is not that long, and I think its cute anyway, but if he is going to shut the critics up, this may be the film.

I personally like the artwork, and think he will do well in this role. He's kind of eclectic anyway in his taste so who knows it might be right up his alley.
I hope so anyway.

Re: The Cross

^I feel like since Troy people see him as weak in every aspect, and the fact that he's a huge teen heart throb doesn't really help him (especially if you look at the Heartthrobs at this time, they aren't exactly Carry Grant or James Dean) I think that once Sympathy for Delicious comes out and shows that he can do the grungy side people will see the wider variety that he has. He has been hugely typecasted as a war/epic side kick, alot of people didn't see elizabethtown or Haven, so perhaps even Main Street will help his image before The Cross comes out.

And a lot of Nerds are actually excited that he has been cast because he'll make sci-fi a little bit more watched. Besides Star wars Sci-Fi seems to be quite the abandon/outcast genre. (I know because my Bro-in-laws Dungeon and Dragons friends are all super excited about it...I almost wish I was kidding...)

Sentence of the day, Aliarch.

And I agree with you whole-heartedly with everything you say.

Lovel, I already read a critic about NYILY (I wonder where that guy got to see that, or whether he was just referring to the segments that have been released teaser-wise already) but he said it was a fantastic movie - apart from the only actor in this who sucked - Orlando Bloom.

I would really say those are "critics" by those who just typecast Orlando as the eternal bad actor. He could win all awards imaginable in one year for just that one role and those people would still say he sucked in that specific movie. They just say he sucks because they don't want to see it any other way.

Off-topic. But have you ever thought about his facial expressions? I mean, yeah... they're quite repetitive... but isn't Jack Nicholson's sardonic, self-pleasant grin as well?

Every actor has something about his acting that is repetive and can be noticed in each character he plays. That can also be considered recall value.

Re: The Cross

The critic may have seen NYILY at last years Toronto Film Fest, it was released as an unfinished movie, so the part with Orlando may not have been what we will see. But I agree that people just like to Bash whoever in the film is the true "sex symbol" Not until movies come out that target an older audience and not just the younger ones that see Pirates, Lord of the Rings and even Troy will people stop bashing him. No matter how good a heart throb is until he attracts the attention of the Oscars or Golden Globes will people lay off. They see him how they want, just someone who attracts girls. I feel this year he'll be shedding some of his younger audience. That or we'll all have to wait until the fans who got attached to him because of Pirates are all over 30....

(I apologize if I started rambling in there)

Re: The Cross

Wow, when I'm 30 he'll only be 44. For some reason that doesn't sound that old, but me being 30 does. If you know what I mean.

I can't believe someone on IMDB actually said he was wooden in Extras, HOW?! He was birlliant and I'm not just saying that because I am a fan. The people on IMDB are not worth listening to anyway. They probably didn't even watch it. Although something nice, there was a thread about him being cast in Angels and Demons and every person said he would be brilliant for the role they had in mind and that inluded males! There are also threads about about him being underrated.

Erm The Cross lol I need to say something about that now, yes the art reminded me of industry too and mining. I also live in what used to be a big mining area in Victorian times and there was so much industry the sky used to look black, interesting fact of the day, it was actually Tolkien's inspiration for Mordor! How nice, plus we all look like this: http://veged.ru/forlj/orc.jpg

Re: The Cross

^ Tolkien was inspired by the area you live in for Mordor?! Wow... And what BEAUTIES you all are!

Okay, I shall post pics of our garden then some time soon... It would be the inspiration for Ithilien then. You know, "the Garden of Gondor".

Oh, and I'm 31. And believe me. You don't feel like that alone. I FEEL old, too.

Ehm... off-topic.

Back to The Cross now, please.

Re: The Cross

I don't remember if I read it or he said it, but after Pirates, it was said he wanted to take a break, do other films that were smaller (something about the block buster films). I think those films have been too restraining for him in his personal life (I remember the interview with Jay Leno when he spoke of motorcyles) and during LOTR, they didn't want the cast to do bungee jumping.

The thing with Orlando is that he started in LOTR and was thrust into the limelight. He was never able to ease into his stardom.

Alex, I recall what you said about his performance in NYILY. The person who made the comment is on IMDB under the name of the film.

The thing with him is that he has these expressions on his face that speaks volumes, and he showcased it in KOH. I recall the scene where Sybilla goes to kiss him and he averts his face. Right there his expression is saying he is made of a different cloth and can't be bought.

I've just come to the conclusion that people will like him, and he can walk bare ass naked on the ceiling and won't be given any credit for his work. Some people just make up their minds that they don't like him and won't give him a chance.

Lastly, on Elizabethtown, someone told me he never wanted to do that film but was talked into doing it. I didn't like the film at first but have seen it a few other times, and you've got to read between the lines of what is going on. The scene where he is talking to his cousin and says my dad and I are very close and his cousin says 'yeah, I'm not close to my dad either." It's those little inflections that he does that the critics just miss.

I'm looking forward to this new film and hope he knocks their little white socks off.

Re: The Cross

I just removed the link to the "concept-art" which was just for inspiration.
Here is what Mayfrayn from OLove also posted there:

Quote:
[Editor's note: To clarify, this is not all concept art. Some of the images were listed as "inspiration" and not by designer Jean-Vincent Puzos. We apologize for the confusion. We are now issuing a retraction on all images and have removed them, along with the text of our post. Only the synopsis remains..]

So, just in case the original artists would take legal actions, I took the link down.

They were suppose to be filming during september and October in Australia but we've all seen Orlando NOT in Australia over the past two months and I just checked IMDB and it now says "Production was cancelled"
Kinda weird. Hopefully it'll just start filming later...

I was listening to some critics talk about this the other day and they all said the actors were great but the movie itself was crap so maybe they are seeing the final product now and quit attacking certian people, thank god it's quite unfair when they do that
